Sparkler in trash can sparks total-loss house fire on Fourth of July
BELVILLE, N.C. (WECT) - A sparkler discarded in a trash can ignited a house fire on Independence Day that left a home on Esthwaite Drive a total loss, the Leland Fire Department confirmed.
The fire broke out around 11 p.m. July 4. The family inside was asleep at the time but woke up and got out safely.
Investigators determined the homeowner placed fireworks, including a partially lit sparkler, in a trash can positioned against the side of the house before going to sleep. The trash can caught fire, which spread to the exterior of the home.
Battalion Chief James Lancaster said the fire may have been preventable.
“Fireworks safety in terms of disposal — they need to be put into a bucket of water or at least submerged in water fully for approximately overnight or maybe 24 hours,” Lancaster said. “Then when you store them after the fireworks are completely done, don’t put them next to the house. Make sure that they’re away from the home.”
Lancaster said Fourth of July house fires are not common in the area and he hopes that continues.
Two family cats still remain missing following the fire. The family was assisted by the Red Cross. The Leland Fire Department said neighbors have collected donations and money to help the family rebuild.
“There were a lot of people there when we were there as well offering help, assistance, anything they could do,” Lancaster said. “When people are there in the neighborhood, they all seem to kind of band together and everyone wants to do good things for the people that are involved and we’re grateful for that.”
