UNCW SGA passes resolution in support of DACA

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Student Government Association of UNCW unanimously passed a resolution this week in support of continuing DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals).

President Donald Trump announced recently that he plans to phase out DACA, which President Barack Obama started through executive action in 2012. The program has granted legal status to almost 800,000 undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children.

Two UNCW student groups hosted "Save DACA" Thursday night. The event's goal was to provide students with the resources to contact state representatives about their support for the program, group representatives said.

The Centro Hispano Embajadores and Alpha Psi Lambda, the Latino fraternity on campus, hosted the event. Representatives said reaching out to representatives can be intimidating, and they want to streamline that process for students.

Alpha Psi Lambda's president said college students are the future leaders of the country and their voices should be heard.

"We really just want to let them know that we are here and that we care about this group of people," Giuliana Vaca-Tricerri said. "We feel that this is what we want our country to look like in the future. We want this inclusion and we feel like the future includes them as well."
