‘She can’t move’: Woman paralyzed from the neck down after acroyoga accident
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A community in California is trying to raise money for a woman who was paralyzed in an acroyoga accident.
At 32 years old, Abby Weiss is no longer able to live on her own.
Judy Washer, Weiss’s aunt, met with additional family members to clear out her San Diego apartment.
“It’s just awful to have to pack her stuff up. It’s just awful and it didn’t have to be like this,” Washer said.
Two months ago, Weiss fell and injured her spinal cord while doing acroyoga, which combines yoga with acrobatics.
The accident left her paralyzed from the neck down.
Weiss’s father said his daughter loves being active in the outdoors and was passionate about acroyoga, which is what makes her current condition so hard.
“She said the other day it feels like she’s in a straight jacket. She can’t move. Everything’s got to be done for her,” he said.
Weiss had been doing acroyoga for four years before the life-changing accident.
Weiss’s father said he did not know exactly what acroyoga was before the accident. Had I known the type of maneuvers she was doing I would have told her not to do it. But I don’t think she would’ve listened,” he said.
Weiss is now living in Chicago, which is where her parents live. She is going through rehab at a medical facility.
Weiss’s father said the family has seen an endless amount of caregivers and therapy.
Friends have started a GoFundMe for Weiss to help her pay for medical expenses. The fundraiser has received more than $155,000 so far.
“The San Diego community: thank you for giving her the wonderful years that she had here,” Washer said.
The Weiss family said they are hopeful she will regain some movement after her inflammation goes down. However, the doctors said there are no guarantees.
