NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A jury found Dennis Benjamin Roy guilty Friday of first degree murder. He was sentence to life in prison, according to the District Attorney's office.
Roy confessed in 2010 to assaulting Carmine Bruno with a bat while he was sleeping. Deputies said Roy was upset over the way Bruno spoke to his wife.
Roy was a tenant of the Bruno family at their home on 101 South Branch Road.
Authorities say Bruno's wife, Mary, and Roy may have been having an affair. Mary was also charged for Bruno's death with accessory after the fact.
Mary Bruno first told authorities she was given drugs when her husband was killed, which kept her in an incoherent state for a few days.
After further investigation, officials determined Mary was not incoherent and was an active participant in her husband's death.
