WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - A picture may be worth 1,000 words, but putting a camera in the hands of a child can give an even better sense of how the child perceives the world around them. That is the idea behind the latest Bluey video game, ‘Bluey’s Happy Snaps.’

WECT’s Scott Pachilis sat down alongside the gameplay manager, Karl von der Luhe, to play the game and learn more about its creation.

“It started as a celebration of Australian fauna and the surrounding wildlife,” van der Luhe said. He said the team realized the game was becoming educational as those working on the game began learning things about their own culture that they were previously unaware.

Each photo a player takes goes into a scrapbook, and special interactions, such as catching your parents in a dance break, unlock a coloring page.

Van der Luhe credited the game’s user interface team for the scrapbook, which includes stamps, stencils, sticky tape and stickers. Every photo that unlocks a collectible sticker can be placed anywhere.

“We really wanted the game to be about player creativity, and obviously the camera is a big part of it, but we didn’t want it to be the whole part of it,” the director said.

Van der Luhe described the locations in the game:

  • The Park: The introductory level that gets players familiar with the game’s multiple mechanics and gameplay loops
  • Lookout: Featured in the emotional final episode “The Sign.”
  • Play Space: While the show references birthday parties, this was an original creation by the game’s team
  • South Bank: An actual area in Brisbane that features a manmade beach and waterpark in the middle of the city.
  • Hammerbarn: Another fan-favorite episode that showcases the DIY projects, home renovations, and backyard barbecues that are a big part of the culture in Australia.
  • Camping: A combination of multiple outdoor episodes and is the team’s interpretation of the Scenic Rim, about two hours south of Brisbane.

‘Bluey’s Happy Snaps’ is available now wherever games are played.
