CAROLINA BEACH, N.C. (WECT) - It has been 17 years since the mass shooting at Fort Hood carried out by Maj. Nadal Hassan, which left 12 Army soldiers and a retired chief warrant officer dead, and 30 others injured.

Carolina Beach native Kim Munley was a civilian police officer and a member of the Special Response Team at Fort Hood at the time. She helped stop the shooting and was injured in an exchange of gunfire with Hassan.

Munley said she shot Hassan twice before he put a gun to her head, but his gun did not fire.

“He tried to pick the weapon up from me, but that side of him from the two shots that I had shot him, his left side was paralyzed,” Munley said. “So he kicks my weapon out of my hand and walks about 15 feet.”

Munley said Sgt. Mark Todd, her canine officer, then arrived.

“That’s when Mark Todd, Sergeant Todd, who was my canine officer that showed up, challenged him again and shot him two more times,” Munley said. “And the last shot pierced his spinal cord and paralyzed him and dropped him to the ground.”

Kim Ratcliffe interviewed Munley about that day.
