Hundreds gather in Wilmington for Out of the Darkness Walk
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) -Hundreds of people gathered in Wilmington for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Out of the Darkness Walk, an annual event that raises awareness for suicide prevention. Organizers say the event is more than just a walk. For many participants, it is a chance to honor loved ones, find support and connect with people who understand what they are going through.
Now in its 16th year, the Wilmington area Out of the Darkness Walk continues to provide a space for hope, healing and conversation. Participants receive colored beads, each representing a different personal connection to the cause. Organizers say the beads help tell stories of loss, survival and support and remind people they are not alone.
The non-competitive walk ranges from one to three miles. It includes resource tables, activities focused on healing and opportunities for community members to connect.
Funds raised during the event support suicide prevention research, advocacy and educational programs across North Carolina.
“We just want people to know that this is an issue, not only is it a statewide issue, but a nationwide issue, and we want to help prevent it. And we need to talk about it, we need to basically seize the awkward, and let’s talk on those things, talk on those points and maybe it will help save a life,” said Nicole Dalier, an Out of the Darkness volunteer.
Organizers say creating those conversations is one of the most important parts of the event. They hope participants leave knowing a community of support is available and that talking openly about mental health can help save lives.
