WECT NEWS NOW: Old Baldy Foundation marks 250 years since Battle of Fort George
BALD HEAD ISLAND, N.C. (WECT) - Jake Grossman, educator and collections coordinator for the Old Baldy Foundation, joined Randy Aldridge on WECT News Now to discuss the historic Battle of Fort George.
On Sept. 6, 1776, Patriot forces rowed across the Cape Fear River and tried to storm a small British stronghold on Bald Head Island. This year marks the 250th anniversary of the battle.
“It’s not the biggest battle of all time as far as the American Revolution is concerned,” Grossman said. “However, it happened right on Bald Head.”
The foundation will commemorate the anniversary with a weekend full of events on Saturday, Sept. 5, and Sunday, Sept. 6, including:
- Saturday: Living History from 2 to 6 p.m.
- Saturday: National Treasure movie night at 8 p.m.
- Sunday: History Hub from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Sunday: The Fort George Block Party from noon to 6 p.m.
- Sunday: Battle of Fort George reenactments at noon and 3:30 p.m.
