Couple found dead from gunshot wounds after 911 call from smartwatch
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) — A husband and wife were found dead inside a New Hanover County home early Thursday morning after an automated smartwatch emergency call drew authorities to the residence.
The victims have been identified as Stephen Larnell Willetts and Tracey Parker Willetts.
New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the 5800 block of Rowsgate Lane after emergency medical services requested law enforcement assistance. Inside, deputies discovered the bodies of the husband and wife, both dead from gunshot wounds.
A sheriff’s office spokesperson said investigators believe a smartwatch automatically dialed 911, potentially because it sensed a hard fall or a lack of heartbeat from one of the victims.
When EMS arrived, there was no response at the door, so they contacted the sheriff’s department. When deputies arrived, they found an open garage door and entered the home, discovering the couple dead inside.
Authorities said the shooting appears to be an isolated incident with no threat to the community.
