‘A bunch of pops went off’: 911 calls detail Sunn Aire Court shooting that killed teen
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - New Hanover County has released four 911 calls from the March 23 shooting on Sunn Aire Court that killed 17-year-old Kamari McNeil.
The first caller told dispatch they saw someone lying on the ground in the 200 block of Sunn Aire Court. According to the Wilmington Police Department, officers arrived on scene just before 3:30 p.m.
The second of the released recordings is a caller who said an ambulance was needed and that a person was dead.
A third caller reported someone was lying out in a driveway.
“Two young men just running by, they picked up a gun, and now they’re running across to the apartment complex,” the third caller said.
The caller said they saw a couple of people in black and someone with a hoodie who ran from the scene. The caller later told dispatch that an officer had arrived at the scene and was performing CPR on the victim.
A fourth caller tells dispatch they saw cars pull into a parking lot and heard gunshots.
“Four cars pulled up into the parking lot, and a bunch of gunshots went off,” the fourth caller said.
The caller said they saw a person hanging out of a car, firing shots, and people running and screaming in the parking lot.
“I’m literally sitting here watching TV, and I’m standing beside the glass door, and four cars pull up, and a bunch of pops went off. I looked out, and this guy is literally shooting out of the car,” said the caller.
McNeil, a student at New Hanover High School, died following the shooting. A second person who was shot was treated at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center and survived.
Police last told WECT that all individuals involved in the shooting were thought to have known each other, and the shooting was being investigated as an isolated incident.
WPD has yet to announce any arrests in their investigation.
