WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - The N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will host a public meeting Thursday to gather feedback on proposed improvements at the intersection of College Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway.

According to the project website, NCDOT proposes converting the current intersection of College Road (U.S. 117/N.C. 132) and Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway (U.S. 74) into a grade-separated intersection with a bridge or overpass and interconnecting ramps or loops.

The design, which would be similar to an interstate interchange, would reduce congestion and improve safety, according to the department.

“The purpose of the proposed project is to reduce congestion and address delays along College Road. The 2024 annual average daily traffic (AADT) along College Road, between Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and Spring View Drive, is 54,400 vehicles per day (vpd). This volume will grow to 88,900 vpd in 2045,” reports NCDOT.

The public meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 29, at 5:30 p.m. at the UNCW Burney Center. No formal presentation will be made.

Written comments can be submitted at the meeting or via phone at (512) 580-8850 using project code 2296, by email at CollegeRd-MLKJr-Interchange@publicinput.com or through NCDOT’s public input portal by March 2.
