RALEIGH, N.C. (WECT) - Voters may have received a letter from their county board of elections in error, according to the North Carolina State Board of Elections (NCSBOE).

NCSBOE reports that fewer than 1,000 voters statewide received a letter indicating they submitted a voter registration application after the Oct. 10 deadline for the 2025 municipal elections. NCSBOE officials say this was a mistake.

“These voters may not have initiated an update to their existing registration, which could have caused confusion for some letter recipients,” stated officials in a press release. “Instead, their county boards of elections made administrative corrections to their voter registration records after the voter registration deadline as part of voter roll list maintenance processes. Those administrative updates triggered the printing of the late registration letters.”

NCSBOE states that no registrations were canceled or removed from the rolls due to the letter.

“This error will in no way affect these voters’ eligibility to vote in the 2025 municipal elections,” officials said.

The county boards have been told not to send any “Late Voter Registration” notices until NCSBOE makes changes to the State Elections Information Management System (SEIMS) to “prevent these letters from being sent to voters with pending administrative corrections.”

NCSBOE officials ask that if you have received a letter by mistake, check your voter registration status using the State Board’s Voter Search tool, or contact your county board of elections for more information.
