WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - One in three people will be diagnosed with some form of cancer in their lifetime.

WECT and other organizations are coming together to raise funds and awareness in the fight against cancer.

Brenda Robinson and Kimberly Rhine with the American Cancer Society visited the WECT studio to discuss the third annual Shuck Cancer Wilmington event.

Robinson says that for the first event, their goal was $40,000 and they reached $46,000. For the second year in a row, they exceeded their $60,000 goal, reaching $93,000.

“So this year we’re going to blow it out of the water,” Robinson said.

All proceeds from the event support the American Cancer Society’s mission to help cancer patients in the area.

“We have transportation grants, we have a Hope Lodge that’s absolutely free, where a cancer patient can stay there,” Robinson said.

Visitors can enjoy live entertainment, food pairings from local restaurants, oysters, complimentary beer/wine with a cash bar, chances to win prizes and live and silent auctions.

“We have some really cool items that are local as well,” Rhine said. “If you need childcare, Gigi’s Playhouse is phenomenal.”

The event will be held at the Bluewater Waterfront Grill parking lot in Wrightsville Beach on Nov. 6 at 6 p.m.
