WACO, Texas (KWTX/Gray News) - A drug store employee in Texas helped save the life of a dog that was seemingly left for dead in a dumpster.

The Drug Emporium employee shared the disheartening discovery in a social media post that quickly generated a lot of attention on Tuesday, asking for help.

According to the store manager, Scott Halvorson, the situation started when one of his employees noticed something suspicious happening out back that morning.

“One of the ladies in the back room opened the door and she saw a man throwing a bag in the trash,” Halvorson said. “After he drove off, she looked inside the dumpster.”

That’s when she discovered the dog inside and immediately rushed to get help.

“We got a ladder and got the dog out,” Halvorson said. “It was still alive. It had a wound on its side and we were afraid it had been shot.”

Animal control was contacted and its team, along with the Mama Nutmeg Foundation Rescue, got the dog to an area veterinarian.

Dr. Jamie Britton, with the Bee Creek Veterinary, confirmed the dog was not shot, but appeared to be injured in some sort of a fight.

“It looked more like wounds from a dog fight,” she explained, “He didn’t have any broken bones, but he did five pretty good-sized puncture wounds.”

Thanks to the quick action of workers at the Drug Emporium, the rescue pup is expected to be OK.

“I think he’s going to make a full recovery. We just have to keep pain management on board, make sure no infection occurs. Otherwise, he looks pretty good. He’s a pretty young guy. So, he’s got a great chance,” Britton said

The Bee Creek Veterinary and the Mama Nutmeg Foundation Rescue are taking donations to help with the pup’s recovery.
