NHCS Interim Superintendent addresses ICE enforcement in schools
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - On Monday, New Hanover County Schools (NHCS) Interim Superintendent, Christoper Barnes, sent a message to families.
In the message, Barnes expressed NHCS’s commitment to creating a safe and supportive environment for everyone involved. He also stated that the school system understands concerns regarding immigration enforcement.
Barnes recently met with the Resident Agent to discuss how this will impact New Hanover County Schools.
The letter states:
“I recently met with the Resident Agent in Charge of U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) for this region. He has assured us that schools and school events will not be affected by enforcement actions. Their focus is solely on addressing public safety risks, not on targeting law-abiding individuals.”
Barnes adds that these topics may bring anxiety but his focus is maintaining a positive environment for students.
