Black History Month: MC Sha-Rock

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - WECT is celebrating Black History Month for all of February and highlighting some of the people, places and events that shaped black history.

One influential person, the First Lady of hip-hop, was born in Wilmington in 1962.

Sharon Green, also known as MC Sha-Rock, called the Port City home before moving to New York City when she was still a child.

She started her career as a breakdancer in the South Bronx in 1976 and became the first female MC of a hip-hop group, Funky 4 Plus One.

In 1981, the group made history on Saturday Night Live by becoming the first rap group to perform on TV’s across the country.

The city is also hosting MC Sha-Rock Day right at Live Oak Bank Pavilion on May 17.
