BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) - Brunswick County Public Housing Agency is set to open the Section 8 Housing voucher waiting list from March 11 to March 25.

“For the first time, Brunswick County will use an online lottery system to register and select individuals for the waiting list to avoid long lines and provide equal opportunity for all applicants,” a county announcement states.

“This federal program assists very low-income households to afford decent, safe, sanitary, and affordable housing in the private rental market. Since this housing assistance is tenant-based, families choose their housing. Participants in the HCVP pay approximately 30% of their gross income to their landlords and Brunswick County Public Housing Authority (BCPHA) pays the balance directly to the landlord.”

To be eligible, households must:

  • Not exceed very low-income limits
  • Household members 18 and over must clear a criminal background check; any drug-related or violent crime activity in the past three years could mean ineligibility.
  • Must not owe a debt to a BCPHA or other housing authority
  • Must not have any previous terminations within the past three years from any HUD-assisted housing like Section 8 or Public Housing.

You will be able to apply online here from March 11-25, and you can use a public computer at any Brunswick County Library branch as well.

If you would prefer a paper application, you can pick it up at the lobby of the Brunswick County Social Services Building B at 60 Government Center Drive, Bolivia, or call Public Housing at 910-253-2222 to ask for the application to be mailed to you. The applications must be received by staff at the BCDSS by 5 p.m. on March 25.

You can learn more about Section 8 online here.
