Celebrating teachers and staff for Teacher Appreciation Week
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Teachers guide, lead, and educate the minds of the future.
“Teachers are leaders and they make such an amazing impact in our classrooms every single day," said Elizabeth Felts, a New Hanover County teacher. "The future is in our classrooms.”
Felts in a service learning teacher at New Hanover High School. She partners with countless organizations in the community to teach the young minds of Wilmington how to give back and become a part of society through volunteer efforts.
Teaching is not just a career, it’s her passion.
“It is the best job in the entire world," said Felts. "There’s not a job where you can come in, you’re going to be doing something different every single day. You’re going to be a part of someone’s greatest joys, their greatest trials. You get to be on this incredible journey with your students and your staff.”
Teachers are inspiration for young people and that’s why we celebrate them. Teacher Appreciation Week is special for educators across the country. It starts Monday, May 6 through Friday, May 10.
It’s a chance to recognize all of the hard work, time, money, and hours they put into making sure students get the best education experience for not just their benefit, but so the students can carry those lessons learned throughout their entire lives.
Over 40 teachers in New Hanover County were recognized for their outstanding work when they were named teachers of the year. Before they give up their reign this month, we’re thanking them and every other teacher for what they do each day in the classroom.
“I hope that we continue to celebrate and honor teachers in anyway we can," said Felts. "Not just teacher appreciation week, but when we go back to school and we need that list of supplies. When we’re running out of dry erase markers, when we’re needing some bigger reforms, I hope our community can look to teachers as leaders and recognize their value.”
So when you see a teacher or school nurse, librarian, custodian, psychologist, and cafeteria worker, say thank you and not just today, every day.
It’s also Nurses Appreciation Week. Businesses all over the country are thanking both nurses and teachers by giving discounts.
