Majority oppose Titan plant in New Hanover County
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A majority of voters in New Hanover County oppose the opening of a cement plant in the area, according to a recent survey from Public Policy Polling out of Raleigh.
Titan America first proposed building a cement plant in the Castle Hayne area in 2008. The process has been in the permitting phase for months.
The survey of 649 "New Hanover County voters" shows that 52% of those polled oppose building the plant. 36% support it and 12% are not sure.
The survey was conducted from April 4th through April 6th.
People living in the area are pretty aware of the project. 90% say they have heard about Titan America's plans.
73% of respondents said they support the governor delaying state permits until the "full environmental and human health effects are known." That compares to 21% who oppose that idea.
When considering why they support or oppose the Titan project, the biggest factor appears to be the environment for voters. 38% of those responding say environmental effects are the biggest issue. Jobs came in second at 30%.
36% rate the local government's handling of Titan as "fair." 32% say its poor.
