KURE BEACH, N.C. (WECT) - Kure Beach town council members discussed possible changes to the town’s paid parking program Monday night.

At the meeting, commissioners reviewed a proposal that would overhaul parking in Kure Beach, including higher rates, longer hours and a longer season.

The proposal includes raising the daily rate from $25 to $35, extending enforcement hours from 6 to 8 p.m., starting the season two weeks earlier and extending it a month longer, and eliminating the weekly pass.

Mayor Allen Oliver said the changes are needed to keep taxes down.

“This is directly to help us with other revenue streams within our town budget. Because we depend on this money to keep the tax rate down for our local citizens and taxpayers,” Oliver said.

Commissioners also discussed giving people more time to buy season passes and charging different rates at different lots.

The board took no action Monday night, and discussions will continue at the November meeting.
