Commissioners to consider rezoning for workforce housing on Blue Clay Road, permit for sand mine
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) - The New Hanover County commissioners are set to discuss workforce housing units, a special use permit request and more at a meeting on Monday, March 18.
Rezoning for affordable housing on Blue Clay Road
Despite lacking a recommendation from the planning board, New Beginning Christian Church is still bringing its proposed 128-unit affordable housing complex to the commissioners. The complex would be built on 10.95 acres at Blue Clay Road near the church itself.
The planning board decided against the recommendation because it would be zoned higher density than its neighboring developments, but Pastor Robert Campbell has criticized the county for not dealing with the lack of affordable housing. The commissioners can still vote to approve the proposal without the planning board’s recommendation.
Special use permit for high-intensity mining and quarrying
One business hopes to get a special use permit for high-intensity mining and quarrying on about 144 acres of a 586-acre area at the 5700 block of Highway 421 N that is zoned for heavy industrial uses (I-2).
The sand mine would be adjacent to another sand mine and is just south of the Pender County line. It would have a 50-foot-wide buffer around the perimeter of the mine along with another 25-foot vegetative buffer along the U.S. 421 and the northern property line.
Full meeting agendas and minutes are available on the county’s website.
