WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Neighbors protested a proposed Aldi grocery store in Wilmington both Saturday and Sunday.

The store would be on the corner of S. 17th Street and S. College Road.

Some neighbors said the area already has issues with traffic and speeding, and grocery store traffic would make things worse.

"Aldi's just in another location I think would be great," said Carol Wulf, a neighbor. "I think something smaller here would be better, a doctor's office or a little strip mall or something. You know it's going to back up to a lot of people's backyards which is not good, and the traffic. Mainly traffic."

Neighbor Iris Malady said there are a lot of children, walkers and bikers in the area.

She said hundreds of more cars from the grocery store could put them at risk if shoppers cut through neighborhood streets.

A rezoning request needed for the new grocery store will go before Wilmington City Council in May.

Neighbors said they will continue to protest over the coming weeks.
