CHADBOURN, NC (WECT) - Police in Chadbourn are searching for at least five suspects in connection to a deadly shooting that took the life of a 16-year-old male.

According to Chief Robert Mumblow with the Chadbourn Police Department, the incident happened at 5:18 p.m. on Saturday evening.

The victim was Travis Lee Bellamy, according to William Hannah, Columbus County Assistant Coroner.

Mumblow said that Bellamy was standing on West Institute Street talking on a cell phone when a silver car arrived. The subjects inside the vehicle reportedly started arguing with the victim. Mumblow said one of the passengers in the vehicle was the victim's cousin.

Witnesses told police they heard shots fired shortly after.

Mumblow said Bellamy was shot twice, once in the head and once in the side. The shooting took place on West Institute Street near the intersection of Clark Street.

The vehicle took off driving east on West Institute Street, according to Mumblow.

Law enforcement and emergency teams arrived shortly after to find Bellamy unconscious on the side of the road. The teenager was transported to Columbus Regional Health where he was pronounced dead.

Mumblow said Bellamy had two guns in his pants pockets, but there is no evidence that shows he fired back at the vehicle.

Mumblow said that authorities are still searching for the suspects in connection to the shooting incident but have no leads at this point in the investigation. In a text message on Sunday afternoon, Mumblow said "(We are) still talking to people for any information."

Hannah said Bellamy's body will be taken to Raleigh for an autopsy expected to be performed Monday.
