BURGAW, NC (WECT) - Pipes burst at a healthcare facility in Burgaw Saturday, causing the ceiling to collapse in a patient's room. The sprinkler system has since been fixed and residents are back to their normal rooms.
Officials said that three lines in the sprinkler system of the Huntington Health and Rehabilitation facility ruptured causing water to come flowing out. A ceiling in one of the patients rooms then collapsed.
The sprinkler system has been turned off until it can be repaired. The Burgaw Fire Marshal said in the meantime, facility staff are doing fire checks. Every 15 minutes, a staff member must visit every room looking for a sign of fire.
According to Carrie Payne, a representative from the Huntington Health and Rehabilitation facility, the facility staff is struggling with the cold weather.
Payne said residents in 8 to 10 rooms had to be relocated during the incident. She said two residents were taken to the hospital as a precaution, but they had no injuries.
She said the facility staff is now preparing to get ahead of the cold weather. They are gathering extra heaters and planning for the week ahead.
