Park adds security cameras after hundreds of Venus Fly Traps are stolen

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Officials with the Department of Parks and Recreation say they bought two surveillance cameras for Alderman Park after hundreds of Venus Fly Traps were stolen last month. Officials also say they added the flash camera they already own to the park.
All of the cameras have infrared light which allow them to take pictures at night. The flash camera actually verbally warns people that they are recording video.
Members of the Coastal Land Trust are also helping out. They set up a Fly Trap Fund which any one can donate to. They say they will work with the City of Wilmington and use the money raised from the fund to add signs to Alderman Park letting people know they are being recorded. Additionally, they say the money will also be used to help replace the stolen Venus Fly Traps and be used as reward money for anyone who helps to catch whoever stole the traps.
"Most of these are motion censored cameras that can take pictures at night and let us see when people come through here and have some images that we can work with," explained Vann Pearsall, with the Coastal Land Trust. "We are also working on adding signs, that will let people know you are on video, we think people will behave a little more when they see that."
He says the money will also be used to install security cameras at other properties owned by the land trust which are also home to Venus Fly Traps.
