WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The New Hanover County Alcohol Beverage Control board approved a deal with law enforcement that allows two Wilmington Police officers to look out for potential drinking issues in the downtown area.

Downtown Wilmington has one of the largest concentrations of ABC permits in the state, and authorities have repeatedly said that problems with crime in the area happen right after the bars close.

Now, police has the flexibility to enter private establishments, which could help keep patrons safe.  Mayor Bill Saffo said the city has been asking for this action to happen for some time.

Some key regulation violations the officers will be looking for include:

  • underage drinking
  • overcrowded bars
  • reports of drugs
  • gang activity
