Cape Fear Community College Students Awarded Top Honor

NEW HANOVER COUNTY -- Engineering students at Cape Fear Community College took top honors in a design project.

The students designed duplexes for a retirement community in Chapel Hill.  They received $3,000 and will be building their design.

The group beat out competition from NC State, ECU, Duke, and Appalachian.

The duplex is also considered green.  It features heated floors, solar panels, and renewable materials.

According to team members, it took time to make the house eco-friendly.

"We labored over a floor plan for many hours. Designed to get light on all sides, plus polar passive heating, so we're proud of that," said team member Keith Burke.

The students meet with the design team in May, and the construction will start this summer.
