A string of decisions by North Carolina regulators means electricity consumers could be seeing a $5 billion bill to clean up mountains of waste Duke Energy created by spending decades burning coal to produce power.

BRUNSWICK/NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A massive power outage affected thousands of people in northern Brunswick County and Wilmington early Wednesday morning.

According to Duke Energy's online outage map, approximately 10,000 people in the Leland area, as well as downtown Wilmington and further south in the Summer Hills area, were without power.

Duke Energy says the outage, which was first reported around 4:11 a.m, was caused by "damage to transmission lines."

As of 5:40 a.m., power has been restored to everyone affected by this outage.
