CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) - City officials with Carolina Beach have determined it is unsafe at this time to re-open the Snow's Cut Bridge Sunday as originally hoped.
In a message posted on Facebook Sunday, council member JoDan Garza indicated that last night was a "game changer" as the town took on an additional two feet of water from what remained of Hurricane Florence.
"This is for your safety," Council member Lee Ann Pierce said. "You elected us to make these decisions. Please trust us. We have all the best information at hand right here in this room."
Council member Steve Shuttleworth says Carolina Beach is operating on very limited power at around 15%. He cautioned citizens to not open manhole covers around town.
Town officials will assess a potential opening of the bridge again Monday morning.
City officials urged those who eventually will return home to Pleasure Island to bring bottled water and supplies with them from out of town to help with the recovery effort.
