WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A mother and her almost 8-month-old child were killed after a tree crashed into their home Friday morning. The father was taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries.

According to a spokeswoman for the WPD, a large tree fell on a home on Mercer Avenue around 9:30 a.m. trapping the family inside.

An intense rescue effort was initiated to try and save their lives.

Emergency response teams from New Hanover Regional Medical Center, the Wilmington Fire Department, the Wilmington Police Department and the FEMA task force worked together in the recovery efforts.

At least three people have died in southeastern North Carolina due to the effects of Hurricane Florence.

Pender County officials say a woman died from a medical condition after crews were unable to get to her home in Hampstead due to downed trees.

Emergency officials encourage all residents to stay inside for safety reasons.
