Coast Guard charter captain gets surprise fly-by guest from fighter jet

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Matt Wirt, a US Coast Guard Charter Captain from Wilmington got a surprise fly-by guest Wednesday.
Wirt said he was about 40 miles offshore when the following conversation over radio traffic took place between him and the US Navy:
US Navy: Radio Check.
Wirt: Loud and clear.
US Navy: Would you like a fly by?
Wirt: Absolutely, (relays lat long)
Wirt: Buzz us like Tom Cruise did on Top Gun.
Pilot: Inbound 2 mins. 30 seconds. 10 seconds.
Moments later, an f-18 flew right over Wirt's boat and he was able to capture the entire thing on camera.
"When the US NAVY asks if you would like a fly by the only appropriate response is…. Please buzz us like Tom Cruise did on Top Gun!" Wirt said in one of his posts.
