Guest Consider This: Educate yourself on the impacts of offshore drilling

My name is Kevin Piacenza.  As Chair of the Cape Fear Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, I am speaking in response to the recent story regarding a local surf shop owner, Hunter Ford, discussing what he says are benefits of offshore drilling exploration.

As a coastal conservation group, the Surfrider Foundation is strongly opposed to new oil drilling off our coast. Offshore drilling is a dirty and dangerous practice that would negatively impact the ocean environment and puts our coastal communities and way of life at unnecessary risk.

Over the past five years, the Cape Fear Chapter has worked very hard to defend North Carolina's coast from dangerous offshore drilling proposed under both the Obama and Trump administrations.

Mr. Ford is not affiliated with the Cape Fear Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation and his comments on offshore drilling do not reflect our position on the issue. We do, however, agree with Mr. Ford that this is a bipartisan issue.

In recent years, numerous elected officials from both political parties have spoken out against new offshore drilling. This includes more than 100 members of Congress that have signed a letter to Interior Secretary Zinke in opposition to the federal administration's plans to expand oil drilling in U.S. waters.

We encourage everyone who cares about our local businesses and communities to educate themselves on the risks and impacts of offshore drilling and to speak out against the Department of Interior's current proposal.
