WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Did you know the headquarters for one of the fastest-growing private companies in the country is in Wilmington?
Untappd, an app that allows users to check in as they drink beers and share those check-ins with friends, is ranked 150th on Inc. magazine's Inc. 5,000 list. Untappd CEO Kurt Taylor and Executive Director of Business Development Brian Parke talked about the company on Wednesday afternoon's WECT News Now.
"It's definitely a big achievement for the company," Taylor said. "Being able to tell everyone that's been working hard that, 'Hey, people are recognizing what's going on at Untappd' is definitely a special moment."
Founded in 2010, Untappd was No. 259 on Inc.'s list last year. The rankings are based in part on revenue growth in the last three years.
After starting with a handful of employees, Untappd has expanded into an $8 million business with a community of about eight million beer drinkers and 625 million beers checked in.
"It was the whole company that did it, that made it happen," Parke said. "A lot of hard work goes on down there. I think the whole company's excited about it because everybody had something to do with it. It went from a team of four or five people a couple years ago to nearly 100 now so it's growing fast."
Taylor said beer in general, and particularly craft beer, is a passion-driven industry and that's part of the reason Untappd has enjoyed success and growth.
With around a dozen breweries in Wilmington, the CEO has seen firsthand how Untappd is tapped into the beer scene.
"It's definitely fun to be at the bars and see people using (the app)," Taylor said. "I feel fortunate that the community is as strong and as passionate as it is."
Another Wilmington company made the Inc. magazine list.
N2 Publishing is ranked No. 3,490 and made $136.9 million in 2017.
