WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Wilmington Planning Commission voted against using land for an apartment complex during its meeting Wednesday night.
In a 6-0 vote, the commission denied a request to rezone a 10-acre plot on south 17th Sreet that had been cleared for a grocery store. A developer wanted to put 180 apartments on the site meant for Lidl, which pulled out of the deal after the land was purchased and developed.
Earlier this week, a resident who lives in the area said he supported the apartment plan, but on Wednesday, neighbors raised concerns about extra traffic being dangerous for children walking or biking to nearby Pine Valley Elementary School.
Board members said the property will be better used for commercial development.
The applicant can appeal the planning board's decision to Wilmington City Council.
