WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Several restaurants across the country are pledging to be more environmentally friendly by phasing out plastic straws.

One nonprofit in Wilmington held a conversation about that topic Sunday as part of plastic free July.

Plastic Ocean Project founder Bonnie Monteleone talked to a group at the Cape Fear Museum about ways people can reduce their use of plastic and help others do the same.

"This topic is so vital because out of all of the environmental issues we're facing right now, we can't pluck GenX out of the water, but we can pluck plastic. We can all do something about this one environmental issue that has become one of the most global negative impacts on our planet around the world," she said.

The discussion was called "Our Plastic World" and Monteleone also talked about how plastic trash affects the ocean ecosystem.

She showed the movie "A Plastic Ocean." Visitors also had the chance to look at a large sculpture made of marine plastic trash.
