There is certainly more awareness these days about the use and abuse of opioids in our region.
But now there is some evidence that perhaps awareness is starting to help the community turn the corner on this epidemic.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield reported nationally last week that opioid abuse diagnoses among its members were down 5 percent last year.
It's a start. But there's still a lot of work to do.
More attention is being paid to those prescribing opioids. We also all have a personal responsibility when it comes to receiving that prescription, by asking if it's absolutely necessary?
Consider This: Programs like the one being conducted right now by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services help. But it will take effort from each of us individually to help save our future as we continue to combat this epidemic.
