UNCW takes down top-seed ECU with nine-run inning

GREENVILLE, NC (WECT) - UNC Wilmington baseball defeated top-seed East Carolina 9-7 on Sunday night with a nine-run fifth inning to advance to the championship game of the NCAA regional tournament.

David Sheaffer and Zack Canada drove in two runs each for the Seahawks (39-22) in the rain-delayed game.

Sheaffer hit a two-run single and Canada batted in two runs with a double to left to seal the win for UNCW.

Reliever Blake Morgan retired seven hitters in a row pitching the last four innings.

Alec Burleson batted in a run on a single, and Connor Litton had an RBI groundout in the seventh inning for the Pirates (44-18).

UNCW next faces No. 2 South Carolina on Monday at 1 p.m. The Seahawks have to beat the Gamecocks twice to advance to the super regionals.
