WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Officers with the Wilmington Police Department arrested 26-year-old Saead El Helo Sunday evening after he barricaded himself inside a home on Vance Street.

Police say El Helo is accused of robbing a nearby Scotchman before barricading himself in the home when he saw officers approaching. It is unclear if he was the homeowner of the house.

Police on scene said it was a "barricaded suicidal subject" incident.

No shots were fired, but El Helo tried to set the house on fire, "destroying the inside," according to a police press release.

There was a lot of smoke in the home, but officers were able to get El Helo out of the home and took him into custody "without incident." He was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Neighbors on the street said fire crews asked them to evacuate their homes.

"I would keep looking out the door, and at one time I saw the house on fire," said Judi Nelson, who has lived in the neighborhood for about seven years. "They just came and told me that I had to leave the house, anybody in the house, because the fire was close by."

Nelson said she saw eight or nine police cars, two SWAT vehicles, and fire engines in front of her home.

"But they told me to stay in the house," Nelson said. "My granddaughter, she had just gotten off work, and they wouldn't even let her come down to the house."
