WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Veterans from across the state gathered downtown Sunday for the first day of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Convention.
The Cape Fear chapter is hosting the event. The veterans will get a chance to talk to Wilmington's mayor, and representatives in our area in the next few days.
Organizers said it's a chance to showcase Wilmington's military history, and a chance for heroes to meet.
"We think they're heroes because we serve amongst them, but we also understand that you don't always make that same choice each time," said veteran and Purple Heart recipient, Eddie Abbey. "And you get up and do what's necessary and it's not because you hate the people out in front of you. It's because you love the people beside you and definitely love them more than the people behind them, so we get a chance to associate each other accompany each year."
The convention runs until Tuesday.
