PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Community members held a candlelight vigil to commemorate Paitin Fields Saturday night at the white gazebo outside the Pender County Courthouse in Burgaw.
More than 50 people attended the vigil, according to Jaime Whitmore, a vigil organizer.
"I want them to know that she was the light in somebody's life," said Whitmore. "I absolutely love and adore her. She was the light in so many peoples' lives. She was a sparkle, and she needs to be remembered as such."
It's been nearly 6 months since police say the 5-year-old was raped and murdered in Pender County.
No charges have been made that we publicly know of, and the investigation is ongoing.
The organizer said they hoped to bring awareness to the child's abuse and death in a renewed push for justice.
A previous candlelight vigil in March drew a small crowd.
Organizers are using the hashtag #JusticeforPaitinFields.
A message board was present for attendees to share words of support for Paitin's family members.
We have reached out to the Sheriff's office for updates on Saturday, and are waiting to hear back.
Background on the Paitin Fields investigation
On November 13, 2017, 5-year-old girl Paitin Fields was taken to Pender Memorial Hospital in critical condition, according to a press release from the Pender County Sheriff's Office.
Paitin was strangled, raped, and assaulted, according to police records. She ultimately died from the injuries.
The assault case quickly turned into a homicide investigation in which detectives have been assigned to work exclusively on the case.
