The 28th annual candlelight gathering was held at the Vineland Station in Whiteville on Thursday night.

Those who attended this year were given glow sticks instead of candles due to safety concerns.

Organizers of the event say it's a great way for everyone in the community to come together for the holidays.

"Regardless of what your background is, your race, demographics, anything, everybody can come out and be on equal ground and enjoy the spirit of community. Hopefully its going to get everybody in the spirit of Christmas and the holiday season, and they can walk away with a smile on their face." Julie Strickland, director of Columbus County Parks and Recreation, said.

Hot chocolate and sweet treats were given out to all who came out to the gathering.

The candlelight walk was first held in Columbus County in 1990 during the Gulf War.
