UNCW students react to Carolina win

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Although the Seahawks did not make it past the first round in the NCAA tournament, UNCW students are excited about the future of the basketball program after their new head coach, C.B. McGrath, who just won the NCAA championship with the North Carolina Tar Heels.

Carolina fans on the UNCW campus said they thought the game went "OK" Monday night and that Carolina played how they expected.

"When it's always Carolina basketball, it's always tight and keeps you on the edge of your seat," UNCW sophomore Ryan Nix said.

Nix said he thought the team was playing "subpar" in the first half, but came back strong in the second half.

"They didn't want last year to happen and I think what they said all year was 'redemption,'" he said.

Coming off Monday night's win, UNCW students are excited to see what former UNC assistant coach McGrath will bring to the Seahawk program.

UNCW junior Grant Allen used to go to Carolina basketball camps with McGrath and says he knows from experience that McGrath will be able to continue the success of the Seahawk program.

"He knows what a good basketball program is," Allen said. "He knows what's going on. He knows the game and I think he'll be really good for UNCW."

Students and people in the community will have a chance to meet the new coach Thursday April 6 at 4 p.m. in Trask Coliseum.

McGrath's new job as the Seahawks head coach officially began Tuesday.
