UNCW police offering medication disposal drop box

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The UNCW Police Department now is offering a safe way for UNCW staff, faculty and students as well as the public to dispose of unwanted or expired medications.

The police department has set up a medication disposal drop box in its lobby and will accept prescription and over-the-counter medication year round, 24 hours a day.

"The drop box is designed to be an anonymous, convenient and secure way to dispose of unused, unwanted or expired medications," said Capt. Chris Padgett. "The safe disposal of medications will keep substances out of our water supply and help keep drugs out of the hands of people who might abuse them."

Prescription patches, prescriptions ointments, vitamins and pet medications can be dropped off. Radioactive or chemotherapy medications and syringes or needles - with the exception of Epi-Pens - will not be accepted.

The police department was awarded a grant from the NC State Bureau of Investigation and Safe Kids North Carolina to pay for the drop box.
