Brunswick County approves abandoned boat ordinance

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Commissioners in Brunswick County unanimously approved an ordinance Monday night that will regulate boating behavior and address abandoned boats in the county.

Captain Mose Highsmith of the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office first drafted an ordinance in May 2016 in an effort to combat the abandoned boat issue the county has been experiencing. The topic was tabled for further discussion.

The ordinance approved Monday outlines rules and regulations related to docking, mooring, interference with navigation, and prohibiting of derelict and abandoned vessels. The ordinance also gives the sheriff's office enforcement responsibility and authority, and outlines penalties for violation and disposal of abandoned vessels.
