WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Alderman Elementary celebrated the statewide arbor day celebration on Friday with the planting of an oak tree. Students also presented facts about trees in our area and read "The Giving Tree."

Kindergarten students gave a special performance for a crowd of faculty and members of the Wilmington Tree Commission. The North Carolina Coastal Federation was also at the school helping the school with their rain garden.

Sherry O'Daniell is the chair of Wilmington Tree Commission, and said it's an important lesson taught at a young age

"When they see a tree being planted and they're excited about it, it shows that they're concerned about nature, and conserving trees and planting, and not taking down," O'Daniell said.

The commission hosts similar events at other county schools.
