WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - WECT's bike collection at Walmart at Monkey Junction Thursday turned into a record breaker.

Close to 400 bikes were collected for Weller's Wheels in one day.

A generous donation of 100 bikes from a Wilmington couple and over 80 bikes by  Wilmington pediatrician, Dr. Lenard Edralin, helped take the one-day collection to a record level.

Last year, WECT collected just over 150 bikes in the one-day collection at Walmart.

The deadline for WECT's Weller's Wheels and Holiday Smiles Toy Drive is Saturday, December 17.

The Salvation Army will pick up the bikes Monday, December 19. The bikes and toys will then be taken to the Salvation Army's distribution center. Families that have applied for assistance will be able to come and shop free of charge.
