WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Two sisters are behind bars after a shooting Friday that marked the second murder in the 13th Street area of Wilmington in just one week.
According to Cathryn Lindsay, spokesperson for the Wilmington Police Department, Kalissa Durant, 24, and sister Cerrica Jackson, 20, were charged with first degree murder, armed robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery. Lindsay said Jackson is a validated gang member.
Durant spoke out Wednesday, claiming they both are innocent.
"I can't even believe I'm charged with something like this, I wasn't even there," Durant said.
Authorities said Antwyn Curtis Beatty, 34, was shot and killed on Friday, September 23 at the intersection of Walnut Street and North 13th Street. Durant said neither she nor her sister knew Beatty.
"I don't have no beef with nobody, I don't know Antwyn Beatty, I never even had contact with that man," Durant stated.
Durant also added that her sister being a validated gang member isn't true.
"She don't wear no type of bandanas, none of that, she ain't no gang member," Durant added. "I would know because our bond [is] real tight."
N.C. Department of Corrections shows that both women do have a long criminal history.
"When we have people who are alleged to have join forces for crimes it's of no legal moment for charging purposes who the trigger person is versus the getaway driver or the lookout, everyone can be held equally under the law of acting in concert," stated District Attorney Ben David.
Durant and Jackson are both charged with armed robbery and drug possession and have been booked in the New Hanover County Jail under no bond.
Durant said she had other plans for her life and was supposed to start school next year. She said now, all that matters is that she knows the truth about what happened.
"I can like send condolences out to his family or whatever, you know what I'm saying, but I really don't care what people think about me because I didn't do it," Durant said.
