BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Officials at the Brunswick Nuclear Plant declared an alert after a pump motor was damaged Tuesday night.

An alert was issued at 8:39 p.m. Tuesday night and rescinded at 9:18 p.m.

The cause of the damage has not been released yet. But, according to a news release all units are now functional.

Power was reduced to 70 percent due to the damage.

Officials say there was no impact to the heath and safety of the public and employees.

A contracted employee had a non-work related medical issue at the plant on Monday and later died, according to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission website.

First responders were dispatched to the plant shortly after 4 p.m. on Monday, and the employee was taken to Dosher Memorial Hospital where the individual later died. According to the NRC website, nor radioactive material or contamination was involved.
