WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - What states do you think of when you hear the words "retirement?" The cliche leads us to associate the state of Florida with retirement, so it may be surprising to see which cities Bankrate says are the best.
The finance organization compared the cost of living, crime rate, walkability, health care quality, state and local tax burden, personal well-being for seniors, weather, and the vitality of the local cultural scene to see how cities compared.
The rankings focused on nearly 200 cities of varying sizes that had data available in all of Bankrate's categories.
Coming in at number 40, Wilmington ranked the highest among cities making the list in North Carolina:
- Winston Salem - 73
- Raleigh - 75
- Concord - 97
- Charlotte - 121
- Asheville - 124
Overall, Arlington, VA topped the list boasting a low crime rate, great well-being, great culture and low taxes. On the flip side, Niagara Falls was at the bottom of the list for a very high crime rate, high taxes, and below average culture.
