BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A Florida man is dead following a plane crash in Brunswick County Friday morning.

According to Sgt. Eric Harris with the State Highway Patrol, David Simard, 57, took off in a M18 fertilizer aircraft from the Bear Pen landing strip in Green Swamp around 8:50 a.m. Simard had roughly 45 minutes of fuel when he departed.

Forestry officials were notified around 11:30 a.m. that Simard was overdue to return. Crews then began a search for the single-engine plane.

The plane's wreckage was eventually spotted around 6:20 p.m. in a wooded area off Town Creek Road in Winnabow.

Harris said crews are now in a recovery phase and officials from the FAA are expected to investigate the crash site Saturday morning.

Officials said Simard was a contractor for the landowner in that area.
